The tummy tuck is like a facelift for the abdomen, removing excess skin and fat, as well as tightening the underlying muscles of the abdominal wall.
In about 2 to five hours, under general anesthesia defects of the abdomen, such as laxity, flabbiness, some abdominal scars or stretch marks (striae), separated abdominal muscles (diastases recti) can be treated so that the patient may enjoy a flatter abdomen, removing as many scars and striae as feasible. The ideal candidate has maximally reduced her/his weight with proper diet and exercise, so that she/he is left with loose and elastic skin, slight fatty excess, and/or separated rectus muscles.
After surgery, the patient usually stays in the hospital overnight, and the following day usually the drains are removed and the patient is allowed to return home. He/she may return to work in two to four weeks, but should restrict straining the abdomen for about six weeks. The scars, usually along the bikini line, usually fade in 1-2 years.
The results of abdominoplasty are permanent, as the skin/fat removed is permanently eradicated.
